Kemptown Arts Trail – A Couple of Visits

A Couple of Visits to The Kemptown Arts Trail

Saturday afternoon, walking to see family and where myself and my partner used to live. I dropped into a couple of the Artist’s Open Houses around the Kemptown Arts Trail, just to see what’s “cool”. It’s weird how just a few street’s difference can give each of the Artist’s Houses such a different vibe from one and other. I’ve seen people just opening their home to show off a few pieces of much-loved artwork from either themselves or of friends. There were also really slick, almost shop like houses with complete tea and cake cafe action going on and loads of “non-art” stuff to buy. The eclectic nature of the Brighton Artist’s Open Houses is boggling! Here’s a few that stuck in my mind from the visits.

Louisa Newbury: I don’t think you’ll find many people who aren’t enchanted by good animal portraiture and Louisa is no exception! Based at Metagraph at the Metway studios, a little gem of artist studios tucked away behind the sports pitches of Brighton College. (Image from Louisa’s Twitter account).

At The Coach House: Right behind the house I used to live in a couple of years go, they’ve made such a sweet little atmosphere, like a tiny treasure chest of art, recycled clothing and other oddments. I tried the ginger cake which as appreciated by the family too.

Margaret Shillan: A really interesting lady painting from her trips to India. Her filler thick hardback sketchbook of dairy entries, paintings, sketches and other things is the memoir material of dreams for anyone interested in life stories… who’s got Waterstone’s number? (Screen shot from Kemptown Artist’s Association).

Jane Hawkins: Another artist with a fascinating sketchbook of details from nature, walking and adventures. Her delicate natural paintings are an absolute treat for those loving herbs, leaves and natural forms.
